What is Ayurvedic Diet?

Ayurvedic diet is designed for an individual according to his/her specific body type or constitution called Dosha. According to Ayurveda, an imbalance in the dosha is a major reason to fall sick. To avoid the same, we need to pay great focus on the food we eat.

The Ayurvedic diet plan is based on an ancient medicinal practice that imposes a holistic approach to harmonize the body and mind in order to prevent and treat health conditions. Ayurveda today is one powerful source of alternative medicine.

Ayurvedic diet is full of nutrients that consist of all the natural eatable components including carbs, minerals, protein, vitamins, etc. Along with that, the Ayurvedic diet is a perfect merger of six tastes- Sweet, Sour, Bitter, Salty, Pungent and Astringent that helps in improving health and reduces food craving.

What is Tridosha?

There are three Dosha or body constitutions – Vata, Pitta, and Kapha, and formed with the five elements of life – air, water, fire, earth, and space.

  • Vata: Space and Air
  • Pitta: Fire and Water
  • Kapha: Earth and Water

These doshas are correspondent to body types, tendencies, personality traits, and nutritional needs. All three doshas are present in an individual’s body with one predominating. Imbalanced caused in the dosha is due to a sedentary lifestyle, nutrient deficiencies, chronic stress, seasonal change, toxins accumulation in the body, exposure to environmental toxins, etc.

Ayurvedic Diet Plan according to Dosha:

Vata Dosha

People with Vata Dosha are thin with smaller bones and do not gain weight easily.  They face struggle with digestion.

  • Consume food that includes healthy fats like olive oil and coconut oil, clarified butter, full-fat dairy, cooked root veggies, nuts, seeds, stewed fruits, and warm beverages.
  • It is advised to eat food that is sour, sweet and salty over the other three tastes.
  • Eat cooked food, avoid frozen food, and avoid juices.

Breakfast: You can have brown bread butter toast or fresh mashed avocado toast, sautéed veggies, rice porridge, rice milk porridge with dry fruits, date and almond shake or hot cereals oatmeal.

Lunch: Make it your big meal of the day by consuming lentils with cilantro, cucumber, and yogurt, Ayurvedic Khichari with crispy okra, butternut squash soup, or rice pasta with pesto sauce, pine nuts, cheese, and black olives.

Dinner: Keep the dinner light having baked sweet potato, veggie soup, steamed green beans or avocado rice.

Pitta Dosha

Pitta people have a medium athletic build and can undergo problems like a heart condition, a digestive condition, hypertension, and infectious diseases.

  • Pitta people should eat seasonal cooling fruits and veggies, coconut oil, consume almonds, seeds, sesame, cilantro, quinoa, rice, coriander, barley and more.
  • Avoid spicy and hot food, fried items, sour food, yogurt, tomatoes, vinegar, alcohol, and artificial sweetener.
  • Prefer sweet, bitter and astringent food, eat cooler food, avoid oily and raw food, and cook food on medium heat.

Breakfast: In breakfast, you can have a fruit salad with shredded coconut and raisins, date and almond shake adding a pinch of cinnamon and cardamom powder, avocado toast, porridge with nuts or oatmeal.

Lunch: You can have red lentils with veggies and herbs, avocado fried rice, tofu with green veggies, or whole wheat pasta with sautéed veggies.

Dinner: Consume green lentils with rice, spiced streamed rice with seeds and nuts, or wheat veggies burger.

Kapha Dosha

People with Kapha Dosha struggle with weight management and have a bigger build. They may face issue including diabetes, obesity, cancer, water retention or respiratory condition.

  • They need to consume lower-fat dairy products, lighter fruits, honey, all grains, seasonal veggies, beans, and spices.
  • Eat slowly and choose pungent, bitter and astringent taste over the other three.
  • Try to consume balanced hot and cold food and try to avoid food with too much salt and water.

Breakfast: Eat fresh fruits salad, baked apple or stewed fruit, rice or barley porridge, muesli with warm milk, honey milk, or rice milk with rye toast.

Lunch: In lunch, you can have red lentil or vegetable soup, Kitchari, steamed spinach with olive oil, pepper and lemon juice, or black beans with veggies.

Dinner: Keep dinner light with split pigeon pea lentil, quinoa, or red lentils with rice.

As you fully acquire the knowledge of food and its reaction to the body type, it becomes easy to maintain good health by balancing your diet.
