Strong yet delicate- the digestive system is responsible for overall well being. All the miseries and pleasure lies in our naval center. When the digestive system is disturbed, it can trigger effects on other vital systems of the body. The food we consume becomes consciousness in the body through Agni, one of the important elements our body and this universe is made up of. The jatharagni or the digestive fire breakdowns the food we consume into smaller substances. The nutrients in the food will be consumed by healthy only if it is healthy. A weak or an unhealthy body will not be able to do the same and lead to malabsorption or production of ama. When there is an imbalance in the Agni department, ailments and diseases strike the body instantly. To get rid of the digestive disease, Agni may have to stabilize, increased or decreased. The weaker the digestive fire will be, the worse will be functioning of all the organs and systems in the body, including the immune system. The immune system is an important part of the digestive system. A strong digestive system governs a strong immune system. It is because when the food is digested, it forms the seven dhatus and the ojas in the body, which is an indicator of a good immune system. The vitality or the ojas formed are responsible for how the body will react to internal and external factors that affect the health.
It is a known fact that Yoga and Ayurveda together can benefit digestive system to a great extent. With this mindset, Rishikul Ayurshala is dedicated to strengthen the digestive system and enhance the immune system through its Digestive and Immune System Therapy. Under this therapy, the center uses some of the prominent ayurvedic therapies for digestive system such as Basti, Vamana, and Virchana. .
Basti Panchakarma is one of the most important Ayurvedic techniques for detoxification. Basti treatment is carried out by introducing concoction of herbal oils and liquid medication into the rectum to cleanse the intestines, colons, endocrine system, etc. Basti Ayurveda therapy is considered the mother of all treatments because of the immense benefits it offers. It effectively balances the vitiated doshas, especially Vata Dosha, helps maintain optimum weight, provides relief in IBS, stomach ulcers, constipation, excess gas, etc. Basti treatment in Ayurveda also offers relief in fever, cold, backache, sciatica and is useful in fighting Vata diseases like joint pain, arthritis, gout, rheumatism, etc. The therapy enhances immunity by increasing nutrient absorption in the body.
All types of Bastis are performed in our center, such as:
The second ayurvedic treatment method for digestive system we use at our ashram is Vamana therapy. The therapeutic vomiting technique is one of the five Panchkarma therapies and is dedicated to extracting vitiation. In this procedure, a medicated drink with specific ingredients is given to the patient which liquefies Kapha and clear the congestion. When the deeply seated Ama is mobilized, patient vomits 4-5 times, eliminating it from the body. After this, the patient is provided with ‘ghee’ (clarified butter) and a steam bath which is followed by Kicchidi (lentil and rice dish) or fasting, based on their condition.
The third ayurvedic therapy for digestive system we offer is Virchana. The process which is generally carried three days after the Varmana therapy is helpful in blood purification. It detoxifies the vital body parts such as Gastrointestinal tract, liver, colon, and gallbladder, etc. and provides relief from Pitta aggravated disorders. Through this procedure, the vitiated doshas are removed through the rectum, by subjecting the patient to Oleation and Fomentation followed by Emesis and Samsarjana Karma.
During the therapy, once the digestive system is detoxified, treatments to boost Immunity are offered. As we know, one of the easiest ways to enhance one’s immune system is enhancing the quality of Ojas. It is possible through increasing or balancing the Agni through the above-mentioned procedures and also, by usage of specific herbs. At Rishikul Ayurshala, we provide patients with Neem, Amla, Haldi, Ginger, Ashwagandha, Giloy, Tulsi, Mulethi, etc. through medication or by incorporating these into patient’s food which is prepared by our skilled Ayurveda specialized chefs. Apart from boosting immunity, these herbs reduce inflammation and provide relief in joint pain, cold, cancer, backache, constipation, congestion, stress, insomnia, etc.
At our studio, we make sure that patients attain both balanced jatharagni and strong immune system. To make it more effective, we encourage students to do some yoga as asanas are very beneficial for the overall health. Yoga poses repair vitiation in all three dosha types, and stabilizes the state of mind. Certain Asanas like Pawanmuktasana (massages the abdomen), Naukasana (strengthens the abdomen muscles), Spinal twists (compress the colon), etc. boost the digestive fire. Also, Warrior poses , Sun salutations, etc. help achieve robust immunity levels. By offering some exercised, balanced diet and herbal medicines, our therapy aims at providing patients with a happy mind and a healthy body.
